International Masterclass

Early July

REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN! click here for more information and to register

Are you a high-achieving student studying physics? Are you interested in finding out about the world's largest experiment? Want to enrich your knowledge and learn from world-leading particle physicists?

CoEPP in conjunction with the International Particle Physics Outreach group (IPPOG) offers a one-day masterclass for year 12 and high-achieving year 11 students who are studying physics.

This masterclass provides an overview of the LHC experiment and the physics involved. Students will work with real data from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and will be taught by physicists on the cutting-edge of big science. The class will be offered at the Universities of Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney and will be run concurrently. Students will work with CoEPP physicists, researchers from Fermilab (USA) via a video link, and the day will culminate with a virtual visit from ATLAS control room (CERN, Geneva).

Cost is free but places are limited. To express your interest, please contact our Outreach and Communications officer Caroline Hamilton at caroline.hamilton@coepp.org.au.

Work experience

Late June

The Work Experience program in the School of Physics allows groups of students the opportunity to experience many facets of conducting research in an academic environment. Students will attend talks, conduct experiments, work on a small research project and give their own presentation as well as have plenty of opportunities to speak with scientists in their field of interest. In past years there has also been special events such as excursions to the Australian Synchrotron and Melbourne Planetarium and an evening of telescope observing.

Work experience within the physics department is offered primarily by CoEPP and the Astrophysics department, with other research groups offering placements at other times throughout the year. For more information contact Clare Kenyon at clare.kenyon@unimelb.edu.au or visit the Science in Schools homepage.
