Researchers in particle physics and cosmology from The University of Sydney, The University of New South Wales and Monash University welcome senior third year and Honours students to the Spring School on Particle Physics and Cosmology, which will be held on the Darlington/Camperdown campus of the University of Sydney on 1-2 October 2015.
In the quest to understand the universe at the most fundamental level, physicists continue to uncover exciting connections between particle physics, the science of the smallest, and cosmology, the science of the largest. Through the highest energy collisions at the Large Hadron Collider they create conditions similar to those shortly after Big Bang and through the most powerful telescopes they look back 13 billion years into the universe's past in order to discover the basic laws of nature that govern matter, energy, space, and time. The lectures from researchers active in this field will guide you through these exciting developments. Topics to be covered in the school include:
- Basics of quantum field theory
- Standard model of particle physics and beyond
- Particle physics phenomenology
- Particle physics experiments
- Dark matter
- From quantum fluctuations to the structures of the universe
The lecturers include Dr. Julian Berengut (The University of New South Wales), Dr. Kevin Finelli (The University of Sydney), Dr. Jan Hamann (The University of Sydney), Dr. Archil Kobakhidze (The University of Sydney), Dr. Michael Schmidt (The University of Sydney), A.Prof. Peter Skands (Monash University), and Dr. Yvonne Wong (The University of New South Wales).
Further details of the program will be announced later. Lunch and small snacks in the coffee breaks will be provided. The number of participants is limited to 50 students. For further information contact the organisers and to apply please register online.
The school is sponsored by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Particle Physics at the Terascale (CoEPP).
